the details.
Here's where I give you an idea of how I work.
People seek consultation with me to help solve a problem. Some come with individual issues, but most come as partners, parents, colleagues or friends who need help with an interpersonal dilemma. It’s my job to help you:
adequately define the problem (everyone’s perspective can be narrow at times);
identify blind spots;
identify solutions and their incumbent pros and cons; and
come up with a plan for executing. Sometimes this is the ideal option, and sometimes it’s the least bad option, depending on the circumstances. It’s my job to help you get clearer about all of it.
I encourage everyone to set up a first session with a few different therapists in order to find the best match. I offer a free phone consultation prior to your first appointment, when we can assess whether I am likely the best fit for you, or whether a referral to a different or more traditional provider would be more appropriate for your needs.
If after this 15-30 minute phone call we agree to move forward, we’ll schedule an Intensive Consultation Session, and each participant will complete questionnaires prior to meeting in person.
After that session, if we all agree it would be beneficial to continue working together, I will outline a plan that includes the recommended frequency and duration of further sessions or coaching support. If we agree that a different or more traditional therapist would be better, I will provide referrals for some great therapists I know.
SERVICES
INTENSIVE CONSULTATIONS
COUPLES & COLLEAGUES / 6 Hours (two 3-hr sessions) / In Person Only
Sometimes the problem is simply another person, but often it’s the way we are reacting to one another that is creating the difficulty. These sessions are for romantic, familial or business partners having trouble navigating specific conflicts, or stuck in a frustrating or dissatisfying dynamic. This also is for couples deciding whether to continue being together or to separate. At the end of our session, I’ll share my thoughts on your strengths and growth areas, how to move forward as a team, a realistic timeline for change, and any recommendations for ongoing support.
INDIVIDUALS / 3 Hours / In Person Only
These sessions are for people who want help understanding or changing their relationships – with themselves, a partner, a family member, a friend, or a colleague. After our session, I’ll share my thoughts on the situations you’re struggling with, your strengths and potential blind spots, a realistic timeline for change, and my recommendations for moving forward.
SUBSEQUENT SUPPORT
SCHEDULED SESSIONS / 1 to 3 Hours / In Person, Phone Call or Zoom
Frequency and duration will be determined during the Intensive Consultation.
COACHING TEXTS/CALLS / Phone Call or Text
Because I am teaching people new ways of interacting, support outside of scheduled sessions is important. Texts and calls on an as-needed basis are available in order to: productively navigate a conflict at work or home; make big decisions; or deal with an unexpected high stress situation. When we get tumbled up in a wave of stress or panic, we do not think clearly. Much of our frontal lobe – where some of the best parts of us exist – goes offline to conserve energy for fight or flight. In these moments, we cannot access in our mind multiple or nuanced outcomes, only inescapable catastrophes. Checking your facts and options with me before taking action will help you interrupt the cycle of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors contributing to unhelpful decision-making and disappointing interactions.
INDIVIDUAL & COUPLES THERAPY FOR THERAPISTS
Being a mental health practitioner brings its own specific challenges when it comes to expectations in interpersonal relationships (with partners, parents, children and self to name a few). I have extensive experience working with psychotherapists and coaches, and understand the unique perspective caregivers of all kinds face.
INDIVIDUAL & GROUP CASE CONSULTATION FOR THERAPISTS
I run consultation groups and also provide one on one consultation to other therapists. If you are interested in joining a group or hiring me for individual case consultation, please send me an email.
INSURANCE
I do not file with insurance, but can provide you with a monthly statement that includes all of the information you may need to file with your insurance company for reimbursement. Because all insurance plans vary, you should contact your insurance company directly prior to seeing me, to determine your coverage benefits for out-of-network behavioral health providers. Your insurance carrier will be able to inform you about whether or not your sessions will be covered, what percentage will be covered, and their procedures for reimbursement.
Many insurance companies only reimburse for a portion of the intensive sessions.
If you are planning to submit a claim to your insurance for reimbursement, please let me know so that we can discuss what this option entails.
